Jobs roll over, AI lifts off, oil retreats

Weak U.S. hiring shifted the rates debate while AI and semiconductor shares led the rally. Crude oil fell sharply, creating an unusual mix of lower discount rates, growth anxiety and geopolitical relief.

Summary

The week in six statements

1. Bad jobs, good durationThe U.S. lost 23,000 payrolls in July; unemployment held near 4.1%. The 10-year yield fell from 4.745% to 4.660%, while TLT gained 1.03%.
2. Technology took controlNasdaq +5.19%, QQQ +5.09% and SMH +7.80%: lower yields and resilient AI demand reinforced each other.
3. The rally was large, not globalS&P 500 +3.58%, DAX +2.69% and Nikkei +1.93%; KOSPI −5.10% and Hang Seng −0.84% exposed regional fractures.
4. Oil eased inflation pressureWTI fell 7.67% to $78.18. That helped rate-sensitive assets but hurt energy equities: XLE −3.44%.
5. Gold challenged the risk-on storyGold rose 7.20% to $4,340.70. Investors bought duration, growth and protection at once—not a simple Goldilocks signal.
Final cutoffAll returns use adjusted closes from July 31 through the final Friday close on August 7, 2026.
Bottom line: The rally ran on a lower discount rate and AI momentum; weak hiring and gold’s surge show that rate relief was born from growth risk.

Final weekly scorecard: technology leads

Friday confirmed the direction: S&P +0.62%, Nasdaq +1.30%, Dow +0.28%. The move was much larger than a one-day rebound and was led by semiconductors and growth-heavy mega caps.

From headline to stock impact

The transmission into rates, revenue, margins and positioning matters more than the headline.

U.S. payrolls −23k
→
Labor cools→Hike risk falls→10Y to 4.66%→Duration multiples rise
Nasdaq, semiconductors and small caps benefited. The signal is two-sided: what lowers discount rates can later depress earnings expectations.
WTI −7.67%

Supply premium falls→Inflation impulse eases→Consumer margins improve→Energy beta loses
XLE and Exxon lagged; airlines, consumers and rate-sensitive growth gained relief.
AI infrastructure

Demand stays high→Earnings revisions rise→Short covering→SMH +7.80%
NVDA, QCOM, ORCL and Vertiv gained double digits. Investors again paid for real capacity scarcity—despite valuation risk.

Gold confirmed that the equity rally should not be read as complete macro relief.
Macro & rates

Macro & rates: relief with a warning

Observation

BLS reported July nonfarm payrolls of −23,000 and 4.1% unemployment. Prior months were revised down by 103,000 combined. The 10-year yield fell 8.5 basis points over the week.

Interpretation

The bond market reduced upward pressure on the policy path. Equities received the lower discount rate immediately; earnings respond later. Growth shares could therefore rally even as the macro signal weakened.

Risk

If labor weakness spreads to consumption, credit quality or revenue, “dovish” becomes “recessionary.” CPI on August 12 will test whether cheaper oil is translating into broader disinflation.

AI & earnings

AI & earnings: the rally broadens

After the prior hyperscaler week, the move spread into chips, data centers and cloud. Double-digit gains in NVDA, QCOM, ORCL and Vertiv show momentum—not a free pass on valuation.

Oil & geopolitics

Oil & geopolitics: price falls, risk remains

What traded

WTI lost 7.67% even after gaining 1.15% Friday. Reports of U.S.–Iran talks and a possible new route through Hormuz reduced the immediate supply premium.

Equity channel

XLE lost 3.44%, Exxon 1.54%. Cheaper oil weakens producer revenue leverage but supports transport, consumers and input costs.

What did not disappear

Hormuz traffic remained thin, Reuters reported. A durable agreement matters more than headlines; disruption could lift oil, inflation expectations and yields together.

Global rotation

Global rotation: West firm, Korea pressured

Europe

Stoxx 600 +1.70%, DAX +2.69%, Euro Stoxx 50 +2.61%. Earnings, tech strength and softer U.S. yields outweighed growth risk.

Japan and Korea

Nikkei +1.93%, KOSPI −5.10%. The divergence after Korea’s earlier AI surge points to profit-taking and leverage, not one uniform Asia signal.

China/Hong Kong

Hang Seng −0.84%. Geopolitical and regulatory headlines plus weaker relative earnings momentum blocked participation in the U.S. tech rally.

Market regime

What the week says about the regime

Outlook

Three paths for the week of August 10

  • revisions decide
  • oil stays volatile

Renewed stress

  • CPI beats expectations
  • yields reverse higher
  • labor worry hits earnings
  • Hormuz risk lifts oil
Watchlist

Seven signals that matter now

  1. U.S. CPI on August 12: services and core inflation

  4. SMH follow-through after +7.80%
  5. WTI/Hormuz: agreement or headline?
  6. Gold: hedge demand or momentum?
  7. Revisions for NVDA, QCOM, ORCL and VRT
