Inflation cools, oil heats up, Asia rotates

Benign U.S. price data prevented another rate shock. At the same time, Hormuz risk propelled energy equities while Korea and Japan took the global lead. Beneath calm U.S. indexes, the week was anything but quiet.

Summary

The week in six statements

1. U.S. indexes barely movedS&P 500 +0.36%, Nasdaq +0.14%, Dow −0.56%. The quiet headline masked a forceful internal rotation.
2. Small caps advancedThe Russell 2000 gained 1.12%. Softer inflation helped even as long yields refused to cooperate.
3. The curve steepenedU.S. 2Y −2 bp, 10Y +3 bp and 30Y +6 bp: less Fed pressure up front, stubborn term premium at the long end.
4. Energy clearly ledXLE +7.67%, Exxon +4.61%, WTI through Thursday +3.93%. Hormuz put security of supply back into valuations.
5. Asia split apartKOSPI +11.49% and Nikkei +4.74%; Hang Seng −2.15%. AI/chip beta won while China-demand anxiety lost.
6. AI stayed selectiveVertiv +7.87%, NVDA +0.54%, SMH +0.88%; Amazon −4.31%. Investors bought infrastructure, not every mega-cap valuation.
Bottom line: Soft U.S. inflation kept the risk window open, but rising long yields and pricier oil shifted leadership toward small caps, energy and Asian AI beta.

Logic chains

Four logic chains behind the week

Observation and interpretation are separated: returns are measured; the chains describe plausible transmission.

CPI +0.1% m/m
→
inflation pressure eases→Fed-hike odds decline→2Y yield falls→small caps/duration benefit
The relief was real but limited: 10Y and 30Y yields still rose over the week.
30Y auction at 5.216%
→
heavy Treasury supply→term premium persists→curve steepens→mega-cap multiples lose support
Softer growth data do not guarantee a long-bond rally when supply and fiscal risk dominate.
Hormuz risk
→
supply premium rises→oil gets pricier→energy cash flow gains leverage→XLE +7.67%
The same shock helps producers but raises inflation and margin risk for transport and consumers.
AI financing
→
more third-party capital→capacity buildout accelerates→power/cooling become bottlenecks→Vertiv +7.87%
The week rewarded picks-and-shovels more than the mega-cap complex as a whole.
Macro & rates

Macro & rates: dovish up front, expensive at the back

Observation

July CPI +0.1% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.2% and +2.5%. PPI 0.0% m/m. Retail sales −0.6% m/m; Michigan sentiment 51.0. Treasury: 2Y 4.19→4.17%, 10Y 4.65→4.68%, 30Y 5.19→5.25%.

Interpretation

Inflation and demand lowered the risk of further Fed tightening. Long-end auctions told another story: the 30-year stopped at 5.216%. This was a steeper curve—not a simply bullish rates market.

Risk

Weak consumption can pressure earnings while higher oil can seed another inflation impulse. That mix is less friendly to high multiples than clean disinflation.

AI & stocks

AI & stocks: capital hunts the bottlenecks

NVIDIA announced platforms with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR intended to mobilize more than $500 billion of third-party capital for AI compute over time. CoreWeave reported roughly $104 billion of backlog. The infrastructure thesis strengthened while valuations were treated selectively.

Oil & geopolitics

Oil & geopolitics: the inflation channel returns

What happened

WTI rose 3.93% through Thursday in the available snapshot; XLE gained 7.67%. Tanker attacks and stalled Hormuz talks raised the immediate supply premium.

Why equities reacted

For producers, higher oil lifts near-term revenue and cash flow. Consumers, airlines and chemicals face higher inputs; bonds may also demand more inflation compensation.

Counterforce

Oil fell more than 2% Thursday as weaker demand forecasts and a larger U.S. crude build tempered the risk premium. Geopolitics and demand pulled in opposite directions.

Global rotation

Global rotation: Seoul and Tokyo ahead of Hong Kong

Korea

KOSPI +11.49%. A chip/AI rebound with repeated volatility interruptions showed the force of depressed positioning and high beta.

Japan

Nikkei +4.74%. Easing U.S. hike fears and AI/chip gains delivered the best week in two months; insurers’ large JGB losses remain a counter-risk.

Europe & China

DAX +0.46%, Euro Stoxx 50 +0.24%, Stoxx 600 −0.36%. Oil helped energy but weighed on breadth. Hang Seng −2.15% reflected weak credit demand and China anxiety.

Outlook

Outlook: what can decide next week

  • long yields retreat
  • AI breadth holds
  • small caps confirm breakout

Base

  • indexes move sideways
  • energy/tech rotation continues
  • data stay mixed
  • valuations cap follow-through

Negative

  • Hormuz escalates
  • WTI and 30Y rise together
  • inflation hedging raises capital costs
  • mega caps and consumers weaken
Watchlist

Watchlist for August 17–21

  1. U.S. 10Y/30Y: does term premium retreat after the auctions or does the curve stay steep?
  2. WTI and Hormuz: supply headlines versus softer global demand.
  3. KOSPI/Nikkei: follow-through or mean reversion after Korea’s double-digit week?
  4. VRT, NVDA, SMH: infrastructure breadth versus valuation fatigue.
  5. AMZN, AAPL, GOOGL: mega-cap stabilization as a condition for broader U.S. index gains.
